What Does This Mean?
A derogatory hacker-community term for an unskilled person who uses attack programs or scripts written by others without understanding how they work. The label is a put-down aimed at borrowed skill rather than a technical job title.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""Calling the defacement a hack was generous; it was a script kiddie running a public tool.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Wikipedia dates the term to 1988 and notes variants such as "skid", "kiddie" and "skript kiddie", with "lammer" more common in Brazil. It quotes a 2000 Carnegie Mellon report for the US Department of Defense describing such attackers as acting with little regard or understanding of the consequences, and says they rely on well-known tools, often deface websites for amusement or standing, and tend to leave traces that lead to detection. This entry describes the label and the way security writers use it; it gives no technique.
