LORE & ORIGIN

Wiktionary describes scrunkly as English internet slang, mainly from fandom circles, popularized by social-media images in late 2020 and early 2021, and suggests it may blend scrunched and crinkly; it also lists a 2011 Twitter use and later citations from Kotaku (2021), The Mary Sue and PC Gamer (2022). "awww the scrunkly" is a nonsense image-macro phrase, first posted on Instagram on May 5, 2021 with a low-resolution fox photo, then spread to Twitter and YouTube in June to August 2021, usually attached to animals or characters with an indefinable scrunkly quality. Variant spellings include skrunkly and scrungly.
