What Does This Mean?
An extendable pole with a handle at one end and a clamp at the other that holds a phone or camera beyond arm's reach, with the shutter triggered by a handle button, a Bluetooth remote or the timer. It differs from the selfie entry (the photo itself) and selfie-spot (a place chosen for photos): this is the gadget used to take them.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""The museum asked everyone to leave the selfie stick in the cloakroom.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Wikipedia traces precursors to a 1925 photo of a man photographing himself and his wife with a long stick, and a 1983 Japanese patent for a telescopic camera extender by Ueda Hiroshi and Mima Yujiro. Wayne Fromm patented the Quik Pod in 2005 (on sale in the US from 2006). The term became widely used in 2014, when Time listed it among the year's 25 best inventions, and in 2015 museums, theme parks (Disney from June 2015), stadiums and concert venues began restricting it.
