[ SLANG ][ ENGLISH DAILY ]

A fan fiction that uses song lyrics as its inspiration or structure, often interleaving lines of a song with the narrative. The term also names the genre collectively.

"Her songfic follows the two leads through a breakup, with each chapter named after a line of the chorus."

LORE & ORIGIN

Wiktionary defines songfic as a fanfic that incorporates song lyrics or uses them as inspiration, from song plus fic, with citations from 2006 and from 2017 to 2021. Scholarship quoted there notes that songfics draw on two source texts and are sometimes dismissed as less original, and that the form is common in Buffy fandom. No dated first use of the word is documented.
