What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ ENGLISH DAILY ]

Short for sponsored content: a post, video or story that a creator publishes in exchange for payment, free products or other compensation from a brand, usually labelled with a disclosure such as #ad or #sponsored.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"Her feed is mostly travel photos with the occasional sponcon for a luggage brand."

LORE & ORIGIN

A clipped form of "sponsored content". Merriam-Webster lists the etymology simply as "sponsored content" and gives 2015 as the first known use of the shortened form, which spread through creator and influencer circles in the late 2010s. Paid promotion itself is much older than the word, and the coiner of the abbreviation is not documented. The term is often used with a light, knowing tone that acknowledges the commercial arrangement.
