LORE & ORIGIN
A compound of 'stan' (from Eminem's 2000 song 'Stan') and 'account'. NBC News described stan accounts as unofficial publicists that track an artist's appearances, releases and chart performance, and in 2020 many mobilized around social issues. The phrase is a plain combination of 'stan' and 'account' rather than a coinage with a story of its own, so it is best read as a usage of 'stan' (see 'stan' and 'stan-twitter'). The exact date it first appeared is unknown.
