Brainrot Score: 3.0 ⓘOBSERVED
[ SLANG ][ FANDOM ][ FANFICTION ]
FORCE: Gen Z BrainrotUNIVERSE: FanfictionCLUSTER: fic_format

A fanfic or other work that reads on its own, without needing earlier or later installments; in fandom it is often used much like one-shot, though a work set in a shared universe can still be called standalone if it needs no other story to follow it.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

""It's set in the same universe, but it's a standalone, so you can start here.""

LORE & ORIGIN

Wiktionary treats standalone as a spelling of stand-alone, an adjective and noun for something that works independently. Its fanfiction sense, a story outside a multi-part series, is common on AO3; a fan exchange page also asks that gifts stand alone. Recent term; no dated source found yet for the fandom sense.
