What Does This Mean?
A forum thread that moderators pin to the top of a board so it stays above ordinary threads, usually for rules, announcements, FAQs or other material that every visitor should see. Members say a thread is "stickied"; some forum software calls the feature "pinned".
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""Read the sticky thread before you post, the answer is in the FAQ at the top.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Wikipedia's Internet forum article describes stickied threads as important threads that rarely receive new posts, kept ahead of normal threads (sometimes in their own section) and set by moderators, and notes that some software uses the word pinned. Wikipedia's Sticky disambiguation page lists "sticky thread" as an internet forum thread deemed important. No first use of the term or the feature is documented in the sources opened. The Reddit sense of a stickied post is covered by a separate entry.
