What Does This Mean?
A technical feature on 4chan-style imageboards: a hashed string derived from a password an anonymous poster enters after a '#' in the name field, which is appended to their posts and lets them maintain a consistent, verifiable pseudonymous identity across threads without creating a registered account.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"He's been posting with the same tripcode for years so regulars know it's really him."
LORE & ORIGIN
Introduced as a built-in imageboard software feature (originating on Japanese imageboards like 2channel before being adopted by 4chan and similar sites) to let anonymous users prove continuity of identity — since the same password always hashes to the same displayed trip string — without requiring real registration.
