XBrainrotTHE INTERESTING WAY TO UNDERSTAND INTERNET CULTURE

What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ FORUM CULTURE ]

Internet slang, especially from 4chan and Reddit, for the opposite of based: a stance or statement seen as cringeworthy, conformist or contemptible, mostly said about political opinions. It is a dismissive label and is not related to the older meaning of unfounded.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

""The reply just said \"unbased\" under the opinion, and the thread moved on.""

LORE & ORIGIN

Wiktionary lists the slang sense as the negation of based and labels it 4chan and Reddit slang, used mainly for political stances. Its dated quotations (1837 to 2002) cover only the older sense of baseless, so a dated first use of the slang is not yet documented.
