[ RESEARCH_TERM ][ ROBOTICS ]
The eerie, unsettling feeling people experience when looking at a humanoid robot or AI-generated human face that looks almost, but not quite, convincingly real.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"The AI-generated avatar's smile was just wrong enough to fall straight into the uncanny valley."
LORE & ORIGIN
Coined by Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori in a 1970 essay in the journal Energy as 'bukimi no tani genshou' (不気味の谷現象); British art critic Jasia Reichardt translated the term into English as 'the uncanny valley' in 1978.
