What Does This Mean?
An online content creator, typically a livestreamer, who performs as a virtual avatar or character instead of showing their real face.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"My favorite VTuber is streaming a new game tonight."
LORE & ORIGIN
Short for "virtual YouTuber"; the usual credit goes to the character Kizuna AI, who uploaded her first YouTube video on 29 November 2016 and described herself with that phrase. The format began in Japan in the mid-2010s and spread internationally in the 2020s, with agencies and independent creators streaming on YouTube, Twitch and other platforms. This is the base term; the existing entries "vtuber-reincarnation" (a performer returning under a new avatar) and "vtuber-clipper" (fans who cut clips of streams) describe specific practices within it. The exact wording of her early self-introduction and the month of the coinage vary between sources.
