What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ MULTILINGUAL NATIVE ]

French street and youth slang used as a casual greeting (« wesh, ça va ? »), as a way of getting someone's attention, or as a general exclamation of surprise or emphasis. It is informal and strongly associated with urban youth speech, rap lyrics and, at times, caricatures of it.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"« Wesh, t'as vu le match hier soir ? » lui a lancé son pote en arrivant."

LORE & ORIGIN

Wiktionnaire derives « wesh » from the Arabic expression واش راك (« how are you? »), noting that it is hard to say whether it comes from Algerian, Moroccan or Tunisian Arabic, and gives the interjection senses of a friendly greeting and an exclamation. It lists attestations in a 2004 series, in rap lyrics (Booba, 2007) and in books. No dated first use is established.
