What Does This Mean?
A crypto wallet address holding an unusually large amount of a cryptocurrency, large enough that its transfers are watched and may be seen as able to move the market.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"A dormant whale wallet moved 5,000 coins to an exchange, and analysts debated what it meant."
LORE & ORIGIN
A wallet-level use of "whale", the crypto term for a holder with a disproportionately large position. There is no universal threshold: a common benchmark for bitcoin is 1,000 BTC, while for smaller tokens a far smaller holding can qualify. Because blockchains are public, services such as Whale Alert and analytics tools such as Nansen and Arkham let anyone follow large transfers, which are often read as signs of accumulation or selling. Whale wallet is the same idea as whale when it refers to an address rather than a person. The first use of the exact phrase is not documented.
