What Does This Mean?
A system of IRC bots that offer numbered files, called packs, for download over the DCC protocol; requested with commands such as "xdcc send #12".
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"Type xdcc send #12 to the bot and the file starts downloading."
LORE & ORIGIN
XDCC began in 1994 as a script for the IRC client ircII written by a user known as Xabi. It extended the DCC file-transfer command, which could not easily handle very large files or groups of files, so that files could be batched into packs and requested by others. The name is usually read as "Xabi DCC", although "eXtended DCC" is also common and the author has said it does not stand for the latter. The word later came to describe file-serving IRC bots in general. It is widely associated with distributing pirated software, music and films (see warez), though it can be used for legal files. Users need a client with DCC support such as mIRC or HexChat.
