What Does This Mean?
Chiefly internet slang abbreviation of "your mileage may vary", a hedge meaning that results or opinions differ from person to person. On TV Tropes it also labels pages and sections that record subjective reactions.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""The sauce is great on fries, YMMV if you dislike vinegar.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Wiktionary lists YMMV as chiefly internet slang, with the example of someone preferring fountain pens to ballpoints and adding that others may disagree. It gives no etymology or dated first use; the phrase originates in the idiom about differing car mileage. The TV Tropes use of the label for subjective-reaction sections is a separate convention with no dated source found yet.
