What Does This Mean?
The exaggerated facial expression, usually a wide-open mouth and wide eyes, that creators strike in video thumbnails to attract clicks.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"Every video in my feed has the same YouTube face in the thumbnail."
LORE & ORIGIN
A 2018 Kottke post already described 'the YouTube face' as the exaggerated expressions used in thumbnails to drive clicks, and later coverage (Popular Science) criticised it as clickbait in human form. One Substack claims MrBeast popularised it through A/B testing; that is unverified. This is largely the same phenomenon as the existing thumbnail-face entry; 'YouTube face' is the older, more widely used name and also gave rise to a viral Venom-thumbnail spinoff.
