What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ ENGLISH DAILY ]

Sudden burst of frantic running and playing in a pet, popularly applied to dogs and cats.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"Right after her bath the dog got the zoomies and ran laps around the sofa."

LORE & ORIGIN

From 'zoom' (to move fast) plus the '-ies' ending, as in 'the munchies'. Dictionary.com and Merriam-Webster say it has been used for pet behavior since at least the 2000s and became prominent in the 2010s; no first citation is documented. The technical label is 'frenetic random activity periods' (FRAPs), usually brief episodes triggered by things like baths or waking up. Pet-video sharing made it a common meme word.
