What Does This Mean?
Spanish noun for a public denial or debunking of a claim, rumour or hoax, as in a statement saying that something circulating is false. In social-media and news usage it is the counterpart of a "bulo" (hoax): the bulo spreads, the desmentido corrects it. It comes from the verb "desmentir" (to deny or contradict).
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"«El ministerio publicó un desmentido sobre el supuesto cierre de escuelas», informó el portal."
LORE & ORIGIN
Wikcionario gives "desmentido" as a deverbal noun of "desmentir", recorded in several Latin American countries (Antilles, Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay), and lists a separate Ecuadorian adjective sense for a dislocated bone. The news and social-media sense of a public debunking is not separately documented there; no dated first use found yet.
