What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ MULTILINGUAL NATIVE ]

Spanish word, especially in Spain, for a false story or rumor spread on purpose so that it is taken as true, now mostly through social media and messaging chains. It is the usual Spanish equivalent of "hoax" and, in Spain, of "fake news". Fact-checking sites use it for the claims they debunk.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"Antes de reenviarlo, mira si es un bulo."

LORE & ORIGIN

Spanish Wikipedia defines a bulo as a falsehood deliberately built to be perceived as true, with a specific aim, and spread mostly online. It reports that the exact origin is unknown and that the RAE suggests the Caló word "bul", meaning rubbish. It adds that "bulo" is the term used in Spain while "hoax" spread mainly in Latin America.
