FLOGGER— ORIGIN, MEANING & USAGE

flogger Member of a youth subculture that grew around Fotolog photo-blogs in Argentina from about 2007, recognisable by a fringe haircut, bright clothing and large public meet-ups; the label later spread to other Latin American countries.

Origin:The name is usually explained as coming from Fotolog, the photo-blogging site where these teenagers posted pictures and exchanged messages. Press and magazine accounts place the beginnings in Argentina around 2007. The best-known figure was Agustina Vivero, known as Cumbio, who is credited with popularising the style and organising meet-ups at a Buenos Aires shopping centre from mid-2008. Large flogger parties drew thousands of people, and the group also met open hostility, including Facebook groups against them reported in 2009. One magazine account places the decline around 2011.
