What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ MULTILINGUAL NATIVE ]

Member of a youth subculture that grew around Fotolog photo-blogs in Argentina from about 2007, recognisable by a fringe haircut, bright clothing and large public meet-ups; the label later spread to other Latin American countries.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"In 2008 half the teenagers at the mall were floggers, all with the same fringe and the same photo poses."

LORE & ORIGIN

The name is usually explained as coming from Fotolog, the photo-blogging site where these teenagers posted pictures and exchanged messages. Press and magazine accounts place the beginnings in Argentina around 2007. The best-known figure was Agustina Vivero, known as Cumbio, who is credited with popularising the style and organising meet-ups at a Buenos Aires shopping centre from mid-2008. Large flogger parties drew thousands of people, and the group also met open hostility, including Facebook groups against them reported in 2009. One magazine account places the decline around 2011. Fotolog itself closed in January 2016.
