What Does This Mean?
"Got harmonized"; a Chinese internet euphemism meaning that a post, video, account or search result has been deleted, blocked or otherwise removed by censorship. It is often used wryly, since the speaker avoids naming the censorship directly.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"His video was up for ten minutes before it got 被和谐."
LORE & ORIGIN
Built on 和谐 (héxié, "harmonious"), the keyword of the official "harmonious society" slogan of the Hu Jintao era. Because "harmony" was often cited when online content was removed, netizens turned the word into a verb and added the passive marker 被, so that 被和谐 means "was censored". The near-homophone 河蟹 (river crab) is a related coinage with its own entry. China Digital Times records both forms in its glossary but gives no date of coinage, and the earliest use is not documented.
