What Does This Mean?
Slang for the blue verification badge on Twitter/X, and by extension for an account that has it. Depending on the period it signals an established public figure (before late 2022) or a paying subscriber (after), so calling someone "a blue check" carries a status joke or a sneer.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""Half the replies are blue checks arguing with each other about whether the blue check still means anything.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Wikipedia's Twitter Blue article records that accounts that held the check as public figures were later called "legacy" accounts, and that on 9 November 2022 the marker became part of a paid Twitter Blue tier at US$7.99 a month, was suspended on 11 November after impersonation, and relaunched on 12 December 2022. In March 2023 legacy verification was removed and a subscription became required to keep the badge. The shorthand "blue check" for the badge-holder is common online usage; no first coiner or dated first use is documented. It names the badge and its status meaning, unlike "Bird App", which names the platform itself.
