What Does This Mean?
Brazilian Portuguese noun for the online "cancellation" of a person, brand or work: a collective call-out, boycott or shunning on social media, usually after something is judged offensive. It is the noun behind "cultura do cancelamento" (cancel culture); whether a given cancellation is deserved is widely debated.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""O cancelamento do influenciador tomou conta das redes em poucas horas", escreveu um portal de notícias."
LORE & ORIGIN
Portuguese-language Wikipedia describes "cultura do cancelamento" as a phenomenon in which a person or group is removed from a position of influence or fame over questioned behaviour, online, offline or both, working like a boycott and used mostly negatively in debates on free speech. It says the term became popular from the late 2010s to the early 2020s, and cites a 2020 open letter in Harper's Magazine as a landmark in the debate. Brazilian academic texts relate the practice to networked communication in the 2010s.
