XBrainrotTHE INTERESTING WAY TO UNDERSTAND INTERNET CULTURE

What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ FORUM CULTURE ]

Internet shorthand for an imageboard, and a suffix used in the names of anonymous image-based forums, usually ones modeled on 4chan. It is separate from the Japanese honorific -chan used with personal names.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

""He said the new site was just another chan with a different logo.""

LORE & ORIGIN

Wiktionary traces the imageboard sense to 4chan, which took its name from Futaba Channel (2chan), a Japanese board whose own name comes from the Japanese word for channel, itself borrowed from English. New boards add the suffix to signal that they are modeled on 4chan.
