What Does This Mean?
The distinctive slang, abbreviations, in-jokes and writing style of anonymous imageboards such as 4chan. Used for the vocabulary and tone of "chan" culture as a whole, not for one word.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""After two weeks of lurking, my whole vocabulary had turned into chanspeak and nobody at work could follow me.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Wikipedia's imageboard article says English-language imageboards were inspired by Japanese ones such as Futaba Channel (2chan), and that anonymity is a core value there. The 4chan article lists jargon such as "lulz", "OP", "lurker", "bumped" and "greentext", and says 4chan helped develop leetspeak. "Chanspeak" as a single label is a descriptive compound; no dated first use is documented. Specific terms in the dialect, such as Dubs, Quads, Checked Digits and Lurk Moar, have their own entries.
