What Does This Mean?
厨二病 (chūnibyō, "second-year junior high syndrome") is the internet spelling of the Japanese slang 中二病, for the self-absorbed posturing and fantasies stereotypically associated with 14-year-olds, such as imagined secret powers, edgy tastes or grand fictional settings. It began as self-mockery and is also used as a put-down. It is not a medical diagnosis. The 厨 variant plays on 厨房, a slang word for a junior-high student.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""Looking back, my notebook of invented spells and secret-organisation names was pure 厨二病.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Japanese Wikipedia says 中二病 was coined in the late 1990s on the TBS Radio show 伊集院光のUP'S 深夜の馬鹿力, where host Hikaru Ijuin said in January 1999 that he still had the condition, followed by a listener corner. It describes three types: the DQN type that acts delinquent, the subculture type that chases obscure tastes, and the 邪気眼 type that imagines hidden powers. The same family includes 高二病 and 大二病. It also notes that 厨二病 blends in the slang 厨房. The existing chuunibyou entry covers the concept in English; this entry is the Japanese spelling.
