What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ MULTILINGUAL NATIVE ]

Korean internet abbreviation of 취향 존중 ("respect for taste"), a request or reminder to respect other people's preferences even when they differ from one's own, as in "취존 부탁드려요". It is also used as a polite way to end an argument about likes and dislikes.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

""Whether you like mint chocolate or not, 취존," she told her friends."

LORE & ORIGIN

A 2017 Dailian article already uses 취·존 (취향 존중) as a label for food and drink products that let consumers choose how to eat them or which flavour to pick, which shows the abbreviation was in use in marketing by mid-2017; a 2019 TenAsia article names a JTBC variety show 취존생활 ("respect-taste life"). A search snippet from a Korean wiki, which could not be opened here, links the phrase to the line "취향입니다 존중해주시죠" ("it is my taste, please respect it") from fan communities, and mentions the opposite 취좆, which contains a vulgar word and is not covered here. No earlier dated use was found.
