What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ IDENTITY ]

A Brazilian Portuguese identity term meaning someone who was born and raised in a particular neighborhood or community (favela/periferia), i.e. a 'local' or 'home-grown' member of that community, as opposed to an outsider. Used as a badge of belonging and authenticity, as in 'sou cria daqui' (I'm from around here).

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"She introduced herself as 'cria' of the neighborhood, meaning she grew up there and is trusted as one of their own, not an outsider."

LORE & ORIGIN

Rooted in Afro-Brazilian urban/periferia and funk culture, where 'cria' (from 'criação', upbringing) referred to someone raised within a community. It spread from favela and funk slang into mainstream Brazilian Portuguese and social media over the 2010s as a term of pride and belonging.
