XBrainrotTHE INTERESTING WAY TO UNDERSTAND INTERNET CULTURE

What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ MULTILINGUAL NATIVE ]

A cutesy sentence-final particle in Chinese internet speech, a playful variant of 的 or 啦 that makes a statement sound soft and childlike, as in 好哒 (okay) or 是哒 (yes). It is the base of fuller forms such as 萌萌哒 and 么么哒.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"收到哒,我马上就去!"

LORE & ORIGIN

Part of the 卖萌 (act-cute) typing style of Chinese chat and forum culture, where sentence particles are respelled to sound babyish. A Sina/Cankao Xiaoxi review of 2014 netspeak (posted 2014-12-17) lists 萌萌哒, says it grew out of the earlier 么么哒, and notes that 哒 appears in cutesy speech such as 好哒 and 是哒. No single first use of the particle is documented.
