What Does This Mean?
Spanish youth-slang phrase, best known as "es de chill", said after a rough joke or prank to signal that it was not serious and should not be taken personally. It was accompanied by the shaka hand sign, became a TikTok trend in 2022, and later drew criticism as an excuse for pranks that went too far.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""Te escondí las llaves un rato, pero es de chill," he said."
LORE & ORIGIN
ADN 40 (8 Sep 2022) explains that "chill" is English for relaxed, adopted by gamers and TikTok users with the sense of "it's a joke, it's between friends", usually said after a heavy joke with the shaka sign from Hawaiian surf culture; it notes that Mexico's foreign minister Marcelo Ebrard joined the trend in a video with the TikTok user Gerardo Vera. Medio Tiempo (7 Sep 2022) likewise defines it as telling someone not to take something personally and says some users later criticised the trend.
