What Does This Mean?
Literally "reverse travel"; going to lesser-known, less crowded small cities or off-peak times instead of famous hotspots, usually for a quiet, cheap, relaxed trip rather than sightseeing check-ins. Also written 反向出游.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"国庆我们不去景区了,搞个反向旅游,去小县城住几天。"
LORE & ORIGIN
A China News Service piece from 4 October 2022 describes 反向出游 during the National Day holiday, when crowded sites such as Shanghai Disney and Huangshan limited or suspended entry and travellers turned to cheaper, quieter small cities such as Hegang and Liuzhou. It notes these places already had heavy online exposure, so the label is less "reverse" than "anti-popular", and warns that popularity can erode their appeal.
