What Does This Mean?
Plural of "flogger", the name of an Argentine youth urban tribe tied to the photo site Fotolog, recognisable by tight brightly coloured trousers, styled fringes and canvas sneakers. The plural is the usual way the group was named in the press and in everyday speech, and it spread to Uruguay and Paraguay.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""En 2008 todo el shopping estaba lleno de floggers sacándose fotos," recalled the teacher."
LORE & ORIGIN
Spanish Wikipedia explains that "flogger" comes from "flog", a short form of "fotolog". The tribe began in Argentina and was most visible from early 2007 to mid-2009, peaking in 2007 and 2008, then lost ground in 2009 as many members moved to other tribes. Fotolog popularity depended on the daily comments on self-portrait photos. Wikipedia names the singer Agustina Vivero ("Cumbio") as the leader of the tribe in 2008 and 2009. The existing entry "flogger" covers the individual member; this entry covers the plural and the subculture as a group.
