What Does This Mean?
An affectionate internet word for a very fluffy, long-haired pet such as a dog or cat, or for the fluffy fur itself; the diminutive "floofer" means the same. It is a cuter, more meme-flavoured cousin of the plain word "fluff".
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""Look at the size of that floof; I cannot find the cat under all the fur.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Wiktionary calls the noun sense endearing Internet slang and says the word is possibly a deliberate mispronunciation of "fluff", a back-formation from "floofy", or a blend of "fluff" and "poof"; it lists no dated citations for the noun. Older uses of floof as a verb (to fluff up) or an interjection for a puff of air are cited from 1975 onward and are separate senses. Wikipedia's DoggoLingo article notes that birds with fluffy feathers are also called floofs, without dates. The pet-and-fur sense belongs to the same 2010s dog and cat meme dialect as doggo and pupper.
