What Does This Mean?
Spanish word for a person with an intense, often all-consuming interest in niche hobbies such as video games, comics, anime, role-playing games or science fiction. In internet and gaming speech it is used as the Spanish counterpart of "geek" or "nerd", either affectionately by the group itself or as a mild teasing label. This is the slang sense for a hobbyist; it also exists as a general adjective for anything odd or eccentric.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""Soy un friki de los videojuegos retro," he said, showing off his shelf of old consoles."
LORE & ORIGIN
Spanish Wikipedia explains that "friki" (also spelled "friqui") is an adaptation of English "freak" and "freaky". In Spain from the mid-2000s it was first applied to eccentric television personalities and then to anyone devoted to an unusual hobby. The Real Academia Española added the word in 2012 with the sense of a person who practises a pastime excessively and obsessively. The same article notes that the first Friki Pride Day was organized online in 2006 and is held each 25 May. The existing entry "frikismo" covers the culture and attitude; this entry covers the person and the word itself, including its use as a label for gamers and fans.
