What Does This Mean?
腐女子 (fujoshi, "rotten girl") is Japanese fandom slang for a woman who enjoys yaoi and boys' love (BL) works, meaning stories centred on romantic relationships between men, and who often reads male characters in other works as couples. The word is a self-deprecating pun on 婦女子 (fujoshi, "women"), with 腐 evoking "rotten".
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""She calls herself a 腐女子 and has a shelf full of BL manga.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Wikipedia (ja) says the word spread online in the late 1990s, with the earliest citable example being a 1999 personal blog, and that sociologist Ueno Chizuko links it to the 2channel board culture around 2000. No coiner is named, and some sources credit shōjo manga artists. Media coverage grew from 2005, helped by the Densha Otoko boom and an AERA feature, and portrayals became more positive in the 2010s.
