What Does This Mean?
映えスポット (hae supotto, "photogenic spot") is a Japanese term for a place, such as a cafe, street, installation or viewpoint, considered visually striking enough to photograph and post on social media. It combines 映え, the sense of looking good in a photo, with スポット (spot). Variants include インスタ映えスポット and SNS映えスポット.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""The new cafe is a popular 映えスポット, and people queue just to take a photo of the staircase.""
LORE & ORIGIN
The Weblio entry for 映え explains that the word originally means a good appearance and that, from about 2017, it spread online for photos that look good when posted to Instagram and similar services; SNS映え is used for social media in general. Japanese Wikipedia notes that インスタ映え won the grand prize at the 2017 U-CAN New Words and Buzzwords Awards. Neither page defines 映えスポット itself, so its meaning here is built from its components and no dated first use is documented. The English entries Instagrammable and Insta-Worthy cover the closest English idea; this entry is the Japanese compound.
