What Does This Mean?

Hashtag Stuffing

Brainrot Score: 3.4 ⓘOBSERVED
[ SLANG ][ SOCIAL MEDIA ][ MARKETING ]

Adding a very large number of hashtags to a post, often including loosely related or unrelated ones, in the hope of reaching more people. Platform guidance and marketing tests generally say it does not improve distribution.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

""Her caption ended in a wall of twenty-eight tags, classic hashtag stuffing, and the post still got no new reach.""

LORE & ORIGIN

Hootsuite reports advice from Instagram's creators account that adding 10-20 hashtags will not help a post get extra distribution, and recommends about 3-5 relevant tags. Instagram has capped feed posts at 30 hashtags, and agency tests reported by search results found little reach gain from the maximum.
