What Does This Mean?
Korean consumer slang meaning that something offers surprisingly generous value for its price, usually a food product with a big portion or plentiful contents at a low price. It is the adjective form of 혜자 and can be negated as 혜자스럽지 않다.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"The reviewer called the set menu "혜자스럽다" because the portion was large and the price had not gone up."
LORE & ORIGIN
Derived from 혜자, which comes from the 김혜자 (Kim Hye-ja) lunchbox that convenience store chain GS25 launched in September 2010. Press reports say consumers were impressed by its generous contents for a low price and coined playful phrases such as 혜자롭다 (a parody of 자애롭다, "benevolent") and 마더 혜레사 (a parody of Mother Teresa), after which 혜자 spread as praise for any good-value product. The lunchbox carried the name and image of the actress Kim Hye-ja; the slang itself was coined by consumers. Convenience stores later launched rival lunchboxes named after other celebrities.
