LORE & ORIGIN

Chinese Wikipedia describes orz as a Japanese online emoticon of a kneeling, head-bowed figure and says the Chinese use of 囧 was probably inspired by it. It also says some Chinese netizens replaced the "O" with 囧 to write 囧rz, giving the head a more expressive face, and that 囧 spread from Taiwanese forums around 2004-2005 to mainland China by 2008. This entry covers the combined form; the shorter forms are covered separately.
