LORE & ORIGIN

Net slang formed from 過疎 (kaso), the standard word for depopulation of rural areas, plus the colloquial verb ending -る. It was first applied to message boards and threads with few posts, and later to online games, live-stream chats and open chat groups. There is no fixed threshold for when a place counts as 過疎; it is the speaker's judgment. Reference sites describe it as already seen on boards such as 2channel in the mid-2000s, but an exact first use is not documented.
