Originated in World of Warcraft, where the game automatically translates chat between the game's two opposing factions, Horde and Alliance — so when a Horde player types "lol," Alliance players see it rendered as "kek" (based on the fictional Orcish language). Players found the mistranslation funny enough to start using "kek" unprompted as its own laughter interjection, and it later got pulled into wider 4chan and meme culture, occasionally tangled up with unrelated "Cult of Kek" internet-mythology jokes around 2016.
