XBrainrotTHE INTERESTING WAY TO UNDERSTAND INTERNET CULTURE

What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ MULTILINGUAL NATIVE ]

Literally "to cheat one's dad"; Chinese internet slang for something deceptive, unfair or absurdly disappointing, roughly "what a rip-off" or "so annoying". It can be used as an adjective, and occasionally as a joking compliment for something surprising.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"After the delivery arrived broken, he typed, "这也太坑爹了吧!""

LORE & ORIGIN

坑 means to cheat or trap and 爹 means "dad". Chinese Wiktionary lists the slang sense as dishonest or deceptive and notes the etymology is incomplete. Sources give differing, unconfirmed accounts of the origin: one article ties it to a northern Jiangsu dialect, and a wiki ties its spread to a fan-dubbed comedy anime clip. The word was reported among the popular online words of 2011 (Sina Weibo's annual list and the magazine 咬文嚼字).
