What Does This Mean?
In Japanese internet usage, 工作員 (kōsakuin) is a label for a poster suspected of writing in a coordinated or paid way to sway opinion for or against a company, person, party or product. The word is an accusation or suspicion by other users, not a confirmed fact about anyone. This entry covers the internet sense, not the ordinary dictionary sense of a covert agent or spy.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""He kept calling anyone who praised the product a 工作員, though he had no proof.""
LORE & ORIGIN
In ordinary Japanese, 工作員 means a person who carries out covert activities such as espionage, as given by the Digital Daijisen entry shown on Weblio, which also lists a separate internet-term entry without a definition. A J-CAST article from August 2006 reports an online theory that paid staff were flooding forums with posts defending a boxer and his family after a disputed decision; the article hedges throughout and does not verify who wrote the posts. No first use of the internet sense is documented beyond that. The label is often thrown at users with no evidence, so it should be read as an alleged or suspected role. The English entries shill and forum shill cover the wider concept.
