XBrainrotTHE INTERESTING WAY TO UNDERSTAND INTERNET CULTURE

What Does This Mean?

[ SLANG ][ MULTILINGUAL NATIVE ]

Literally "across provinces"; short for 跨省追捕 (cross-province pursuit), the practice, as China Digital Times describes it, of local agents travelling to another province to detain a person over criticism posted online. In internet jokes it is also used humorously and as self-censorship, as in 小心跨省, to mock the idea that a comment could draw a response from far away.

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

"这话我就不多说了,小心跨省。"

LORE & ORIGIN

China Digital Times traces the phrase to a widely reported April 2009 case in which a netizen who posted pictures mocking land seizures in Lingbao, Henan, was detained in Shanghai; after that and later cross-province detentions, the phrase became an internet meme. The same entry quotes a post dated 2014-10-28 ending with the joke welcome to cross the provincial lines. The exact first use of the shorthand 跨省 is not documented.
