What Does This Mean?
A phrase, and the chat message it describes, used to mock a loss or failure: viewers type "L" to say someone lost, whether a streamer, a player or a public figure. Often written "Ls in the chat" or "L in chat".
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""He missed the winning shot in the last second, so chat is dropping L in the chat.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Wiktionary defines it as informal internet and Twitch slang for a loss, failure or unfortunate event, with the related forms "F in the chat" and "W in the chat", but it has no etymology or dated citations. Urban Dictionary describes the L/W habit of spamming one letter in chat to signal disapproval or approval of what a streamer did. No source documents who first wrote it or when, and the phrase may be a variation of the older single-letter reactions. It extends the existing L entry to the "in the chat" framing.
