What Does This Mean?
Clipping of 메갈리아 (Megalia), the 2015 Korean feminist online community known for 'mirroring' misogynist posts; the clipped word is also used as a broad, contested label (often pejorative) against women seen as radical feminists.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"A news explainer on the 2018 Isu Station incident listed '메갈' among terms whose meaning is disputed."
LORE & ORIGIN
Megalia started in May-June 2015 on the forum DC Inside; its signature tactic was reposting misogynist posts with genders swapped ('mirroring'). After DC Inside removed its posts, supporters built their own site, Megalian.com. In December 2015 moderators banned homophobic posts and a group who objected left to found Womad in early 2016; Megalia closed in 2017. Korean press notes the word 메갈 kept circulating after the site closed, used both by supporters and as an accusation against women who are labelled radical, with the label itself contested. Sources: English Wikipedia and Korean news; sources differ on the details of the split.
