What Does This Mean?
なろう系 (narou kei, "Narou-type") is a Japanese label for works that originated on the novel-posting site 小説家になろう (Shōsetsuka ni Narō) and were then published in book form, especially isekai stories in which the hero is reincarnated or transported to another world, plus genres such as villainess and broken-engagement stories. It can be a neutral genre name, but it is also used as a mocking or dismissive label for formulaic plots, so it should be used with care.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
""Critics called the series なろう系 because the hero is reborn in another world with overwhelming powers.""
LORE & ORIGIN
Japanese Wikipedia describes なろう系 as a collective name for works born on 小説家になろう that went on to be published, with isekai the most common type, and says similar settings multiply because many posters rework popular ideas rather than because the site directs it. It states that the site was opened as a personal site on 2 April 2004 by Yusuke Umezaki, that the term is sometimes used neutrally and sometimes as a jeer or pejorative about easy plot developments, and that the operator has not used the term itself. No dated first use of the label is documented.
