What Does This Mean?
An animated GIF/video of a rainbow-trailed, Pop-Tart-bodied flying cat set to a repetitive Japanese Vocaloid song, used broadly as a symbol of absurd, joyful internet nonsense.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
"That group chat notification sound is basically Nyan Cat at this point."
LORE & ORIGIN
The cat visual was created by American artist Christopher Torres in Dallas, TX and posted to his LOL-Comics site in April 2011; on April 5, 2011, YouTube user saraj00n combined it with the Japanese Vocaloid song "Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya!" by daniwellP (featuring Hatsune Miku, originally posted to Niconico in July 2010) to create the final viral video — making Nyan Cat a genuine US/Japan mashup, with the cat visual and naming American and the song Japanese.
